About French Wine Country
Viticulture arrived in Gaul around 500 BC with the Phoenician and Greek maritime trade. Initially, it developed in Provence and Languedoc, later in Bordeaux and the northern Rhône, and then spread throughout France. The Romans, and particularly the monks, turned viticulture into a flourishing economic sector. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, viticulture largely ceased, but the knowledge survived in the monasteries. In the High Middle Ages, the wine trade flourished again.
From the Middle Ages to the Modern Era
In the late 18th century, wine was no longer solely afforded by emperors, kings, and nobles; the growing middle class also consumed increasingly better qualities—a new category emerged: the sought-after luxury product "Grand Vin." Driven by the 1855 World Exhibition in Paris and under Napoleon III, Bordeaux wines were classified into five quality levels. This brought worldwide fame to wines that are still renowned today, such as Lafite & Co.
In 1875, France achieved the largest harvest in its history with 2.5 million hectares of vineyards and 84 million hectoliters; in the following years, the phylloxera aphid destroyed large parts of the vines. It was not until the 1980s that French wine regained its former importance—more modern, quality-oriented, and internationally influential.
France has almost 800,000 hectares of vineyards, making it currently the third-largest wine-producing country in the world (behind China and Spain). With approximately 40 to 50 million hectoliters annually, France is one of the largest wine producers worldwide. Every sixth bottle of wine consumed globally comes from France.
