Über die Weinregion
Climate, terroir, and grape varieties
Climate
In the north, temperatures are significantly cooler and influenced by the Mistral wind. The region benefits from long growing seasons. The further south one travels along the Rhône, the warmer and more Mediterranean it becomes – and the more robust the wines appear.
Terroir
In the north, steep terraces and granite and slate soils define the landscape, contributing to a pure, precise style. In the south, gravel plateaus, as well as sandy and clay soils, are increasingly found, forming the basis for complex cuvées – with the unmistakable herbal notes that characterize the wines of the Southern Rhône.
Vineyard Area
The vineyard area is spread across numerous appellations – from renowned single vineyards in the north to the broadly defined areas of the Côtes du Rhône in the south. This gives the Rhône a remarkable diversity of styles and price categories.
Grape Varieties
In the Rhône – especially in the northern part – the Syrah grape variety clearly dominates, convincing with its aromas of black pepper, violet, and blackberry, as well as firm tannins and, if not harvested too late, a cool freshness. The further south one goes, the more frequently Grenache and Mourvèdre grape varieties are found in the cuvées. These lend the wines ripe red fruit, fine spice, and the characteristic garrigue herbal notes. White wine is predominantly native to the Northern Rhône, but also found in the south – for example, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. Particularly noteworthy here are the grape varieties Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. The white wines of the Rhône range from fresh, uncomplicated companions with herbal notes and delicate fruit to full-bodied, creamy, waxy, and opulent variations.
Côtes du Rhône & Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Côtes du Rhône stands for accessible wines of reliable quality. A typical red Côtes-du-Rhône wine shows red fruit, soft tannins, and subtle spice – ideal for barbecues, pasta, and Mediterranean cuisine. Particularly noteworthy is the Clavin Côtes du Rhône from La Vieille Julienne – a wine with depth and elegance, as only Domaine La Vieille Julienne can produce.
For connoisseurs, but also for anyone who simply wants to try a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the region is particularly exciting. It produces profound and complex wines with remarkable aging potential. Particularly noteworthy here are Famille Perrin with Château de Beaucastel, as well as Rayas and La Vieille Julienne – excellent producers with great renown.

Rhône red wines
The red wines of the Rhône are characterized by a multitude of grape varieties – with one grape variety in particular taking center stage: Syrah. Whether on its own or in a blend, this grape variety delivers powerful, often full-bodied red wines with plenty of fruit and structure. The wines prove to be very long-lived and can often mature for decades. This is also why this wine-growing region enjoys an excellent reputation. Producers such as Guigal or Chapoutier are globally synonymous with first-class Rhône wine.

History and Wine Culture in the Rhône Valley
Wine tradition in the Rhône Valley dates back to Roman times. Over centuries, terraced vineyards were created – separating the wheat from the chaff, as it were. Today, the wines have a clear origin profile and a culture that transforms the interplay of climate, soil, and grape variety into magical moments in the bottle.
Many Rhône vineyards look back on a long and fascinating history – such as the legendary Hermitage hill. According to tradition, the crusader Gaspard de Sterimberg settled there as a hermit upon his return (hence the name Hermitage) and began to cultivate and terrace the hill.
