Description

France / Côtes du Rhône / Clavin

At the northern border of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on the heights of the single vineyard "lieu-dit Clavin," the Domaine de la Vieille Julienne estate was established in the 17th century. The vines for this very rare, top-tier Côtes du Rhône are, on average, 85 years old! On the heights of "lieu-dit Clavin," sand and red clay cover the soil, ensuring vines that produce highly concentrated wines, more comparable to a fresh Châteauneuf-du-Pape than to a Côtes du Rhône. The vineyard area is only 5.5 hectares and is harvested exclusively by hand. The harvested grapes are gently transported to the winery in small picking bins.

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

On the northern border of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on the heights of the single site ‘lieu-dit Clavin’, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne was established in the 17th century and is now considered one of the leading estates of the region. Since 1990, the Domaine has been owned by Jean-Paul Daumen, who took over the estate from his father. He was the one who brought biodynamics in its purest form to the winery.

The vines for the very rare top Côtes du Rhône are on average 85 years old. On the heights of ‘lieu-dit Clavin’, sand and red clay cover the soils, producing vines that yield highly concentrated wines more comparable to a fresh Châteauneuf-du-Pape than to a Côtes du Rhône.

The Domaine’s vineyards cover around 15 hectares and are planted with the region’s traditional grape varieties, such as Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

The wines embody the essence of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and stand for tradition, quality and passion.

Origin in Focus

Rhône

The Rhône is divided into two distinctive parts: the northern Rhône, with steep terraces and a cooler climate, and the southern Rhône, with Mediterranean warmth and wide plains.

In the north, Syrah dominates, producing powerful, spicy red wines.

In the south, blends are the focus, above all Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, ranging from juicy and spicy to powerful and complex.

Well-known appellations include Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Côtes du Rhône, which stand for accessible, versatile wines. Herbal garrigue notes, dark berry fruit and fine spice are typical aromatic profiles.
