Château Smith Haut Lafitte

In the gentle hills of the Bordeaux region, Château Smith Haut Lafitte rises majestically as a jewel among Bordeaux estates. For more than two centuries, this historic property has stood for outstanding wines and French elegance. The vineyards cover 78 hectares in the commune of Pessac-Léognan and are planted with the region’s classic grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Wine was already being grown at Château Smith Haut Lafitte in the mid-14th century, making its vineyards among the oldest in Bordeaux. In 1990, Daniel and Florence Cathiard, a former top-level athletic couple from the French Olympic ski team, acquired the château.

One third of the vineyards were replanted, sustainable management was introduced and a cooperage was built on the estate. With these major investments, they transformed an underperforming estate into a highly acclaimed top producer of both red and white wines. In recent years, a high-class hotel and a two-Michelin-starred restaurant have been added to the estate.

The château itself is an impressive sight, an architectural masterpiece that reflects the history and tradition of Bordeaux. Visitors are enchanted by the beauty of the estate and the warm hospitality of its people.

In the world of wine, Château Smith Haut Lafitte stands as a symbol of excellence and prestige. Its wines are not only a pleasure for the palate, but also a tribute to the long tradition of winemaking in Bordeaux. With every new vintage, the estate proves its ability to create timeless masterpieces that capture the hearts of wine lovers around the world.

Origin in Focus

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is one of the world’s most renowned wine regions – a name that has stood for elegance, diversity and ageing potential for centuries. Gravel, clay and limestone soils alternate, allowing fine nuances in the wines that reflect both terroir and craftsmanship.

Bordeaux is typically known for blends in which grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc work together harmoniously.

Stylistically, red Bordeaux wines are defined by a balance of fruit, structure and freshness. The white wines – usually made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and sometimes Muscadelle – range from crisp and citrus-driven to creamy and complex.
