Wine was planted at Château Smith Haut Lafitte as early as the mid-14th century, making the vineyards one of the oldest in Bordeaux. In 1990, the former top athletes of the French Olympic ski team acquired the château. A third of the vineyards were replanted, organic farming was introduced and a cooperage was built on site. With this massive investment, they have turned an underperforming winery into a highly acclaimed top producer of both red and white wines. For the past few years, a high-end hotel and two-Michelin-star restaurant have complemented the property.
