Description

Spain / Castile Leon / Toro

The vines in the small Victorino vineyard are between 45 and 100 years old. Due to the sandy soil, they were not destroyed by the phylloxera plague – a rarity in Spain. During the harvest, the grapes are picked by hand and meticulously selected again at the winery. Afterwards, they are gently pressed with the feet in the traditional way, so as not to damage the seeds. In this way, no bitter substances enter the wine and the tannins become silky soft. With this effort, the Eguren family, owners of Bodega Teso la Monja, are well on their way to becoming one of the icons of Spanish winemaking with their wines.

Bodega Teso La Monja

Bodega Teso La Monja is one of the outstanding estates of the Toro region and was founded by the Eguren family, which had already set benchmarks with Numanthia. The estate works mainly with the indigenous Tinta de Toro grape variety, whose old, often ungrafted vines deliver extremely low yields and impressive concentration. The sparse, sandy soils and continental climate with hot days and cool nights create ideal conditions for wines of great density, structure and aromatic depth. In the cellar, Teso La Monja relies on precise manual work, careful selection and high-quality barriques, producing powerful yet elegant and complex wines. The estate’s top wines are now among the region’s most sought-after growths and impressively embody the modern, high-quality style of Toro.

Origin in Focus

Toro

Toro lies in the hot, continental highlands of Castile and is famous for its expressive Tempranillo wines, locally called Tinta de Toro. The vines often grow on sandy, sparse soils and can be very old – many even ungrafted. The extreme climate, with scorching hot days, cold nights and minimal rainfall, produces small, highly concentrated berries. Wines from Toro are therefore powerful, dark and spicy, yet surprisingly fresh, carried by firm, ripe tannins. Modern producers combine this intensity with greater finesse and precision. Houses such as Numanthia and Pintia (Vega Sicilia) have made Toro internationally known as an origin for characterful, long-lived premium red wines.
