Invest
Benefit from our investment packages put together exclusively by our experts.
At Collectors Wine World, we developed a concept together with our advisory board, which includes Markus Del Monego (World Champion Sommelier 1998, Master of Wine and second best wine critic in the world) and Carl-Johann Tesdorpf (his family wine business existed from 1678 to 2019). Since then, we at Collectors Wine World have been able to make 'wine as an investment' accessible to our customers and share our passion for wine with them.
For our investors, the passion and joy of building and owning their own wine collection predominates. Pride and, of course, the expectation that the investment will pay off and that wine prices will develop positively. So passion paired with returns is the motivation.
Apart from that, many of our customers plan to sell only a portion of the wine and pass the majority on to the next generation or to enjoy with their family and friends. As a rule, our customers are not dependent on generating a return, but want to find out and learn more about this exciting topic of wine. That is why we offer many services related to wine, especially for our investors.
Investments in wine with a focus on Bordeaux have a fundamental difference to the classic asset classes: I am acquiring a product that generally gets better over time and that I can sell, keep or enjoy. In the latter case, the empty bottle usually has additional emotional value.
In terms of handling , investing in wine is straightforward and comparable to trading financial products, provided you turn to the right partner. In terms of return potential , investments in wine lie somewhere between bonds and shares. Prices of top wines can more than double, but there are also times when you get little or no return. In terms of risk , particularly of total loss, investments in wine are manageable, top wines rarely fall below their purchase price and the alternative pleasure return is often priceless, especially if you share these wines with your family and good friends.
The biggest challenges and hurdles to investing in wine are the following:
- Firstly, very few investors have a thorough understanding of which wines are actually worth investing in. To do this, you need professional advice from experienced wine experts.
- Secondly, investors usually do not have access to the wines in the appropriate quantities. We are not talking about buying just one bottle. Since the 2014 vintage, we have had one of the largest collections of Bordeaux wines with over 100,000 bottles and therefore have access to so-called allocations, i.e. the allocation of Bordeaux wines. This is the basic prerequisite for investing in wine: without allocations, there is no wine.
- Thirdly: Without complete provenance and perfect storage, you won't get top prices. Our wines for investment all come directly from the cellars of the châteaux and are delivered chilled to our central warehouse. There they are stored at 14 degrees and 65 percent humidity, monitored and checked every minute. We can attest to this; this form of storage makes a huge difference for wines that can be stored for over 50 years.
- Fourth: You have to trust a partner! This partner has to provide optimal and fair advice, be able to source the wines, guarantee their authenticity, ensure perfect storage and have ideas and concepts about how and when to resell wines.
Subscription
Buying wines during the bottling phase, i.e. before the official market launch, is often referred to as “wine en primeur” or “wine subscription”.
WHY BUY SUBSCRIPTION?
- Pre-sales: You have the opportunity to purchase wines of a particular vintage before they are bottled and officially offered for sale.
- Price advantage: Typically, wineries offer lower prices during the subscription period. This can be an opportunity for you to purchase wine at a lower price before prices increase once the wine hits the market.
- Limited availability: Since wineries produce a limited amount of wine, availability may be limited during the subscription period. Take advantage of the opportunity to secure specific quantities of the wine.
- Storage: After your purchase during the subscription period, the winery stores the wine in its cellars until it is ready for collection or shipment. This allows the wine to age optimally.
- Delivery: As soon as the wine is ready, it will be delivered to you or you can pick it up.
- Investment aspect: Use wine subscriptions not only for personal enjoyment, but also as an investment, as some wines can increase in value over time.
