Burgundy: Home of Great Wines and Great Stories
Burgundy is much more than a wine – it's a cult. According to some great wine critics, those who know Burgundy are among the world's wine connoisseurs.
Burgundy stretches like a string from north to south. From Chablis in the north to Mâconnais in the south, the finest wines in the world are produced. The region is considered the cradle of great, terroir-driven wines. Small parcels tell great stories. Burgundy reveals precision, depth, and a quiet power that moves connoisseurs worldwide. Those looking for Burgundy wine will find a diversity that is unparalleled, from the mineral Chablis to the creamy finesse of the Côte d'Or – Burgundy wine is the crowning glory of any wine enjoyment.
Burgundy
If one had to describe Burgundy, the most fitting word would be fragmented. Burgundy is a supreme discipline for every sommelier and connoisseur. As the saying goes: "If you understand Burgundy, you understand the world of wine."
Burgundy is structured like a mosaic – geologically complex and shaped by craftsmanship. Cool winters, warm summers, pronounced differences in day-night temperatures. Limestone and marl soils, interspersed with fossil inclusions, characterize the style of this unique winegrowing region.
Depending on the slope, exposure, and soil variation, wines from Burgundy show astonishing ranges – from taut and saline to velvety and deep. This interplay forms the foundation for great Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, which are considered a benchmark worldwide.

Red wines from Burgundy
Red wines from Burgundy are 99% made from the Pinot Noir grape variety – a grape that combines complexity, elegance, and enchanting depth.
In the red wine stronghold of Côte de Nuits, more concentrated Burgundies with darker cherry fruit, violets, delicate spice, and silky, fine-grained tannins are often produced. In the Côte de Beaune, Pinot Noirs often display a softer character as well as light fruit with floral notes, delicate structure, and remarkable elegance. The Côte Chalonnaise delivers charming, earlier-drinking wines with clear provenance, while selected sites in the Mâconnais offer fruit-driven pleasure wines at an affordable entry price. World-famous red wine producers such as Romanée-Conti and Armand Rousseau are based in Burgundy and are revered and collected like works of art.

White Wines from Burgundy
In addition to the main grape variety Chardonnay, white wines from Burgundy are also made from the less common grape variety Aligoté.
Burgundy Chardonnays are among the best in the world and still serve as a model for many winemakers worldwide today. From the salty, chalky clarity in Chablis to the chalky, powerful creaminess of the Côte de Beaune wines to the sunny fruit of the Mâconnais: Burgundy Chardonnay balances energy, texture, and finesse. The most famous Chardonnay sites are Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. There are countless world-famous wineries such as Leflaive, Roulot, and Coche-Dury, to name but a few.

Chablis – Limestone, Coolness, Clarity
Chablis represents Chardonnay in its tautest, saline-mineral form. Pure Chardonnay from Kimmeridgian limestone soils yields citrusy wines that smell of chalk and blossoms and possess a cool precision. In addition to simple Petit Chablis or Chablis, there are also many Premier Cru Chablis and seven Chablis Grand Cru sites.
Côte de Nuits – Pinot Noir Stronghold
This is where some of the most famous Burgundies are produced: dense yet elegant Pinot Noirs with depth, tension, and fine-grained tannins. Cherry fruit, violets, undergrowth, and a cool spiciness characterize these wines. Grand Cru sites are rare and sought-after – but even Village and Premier Cru wines always offer a delight.
Côte de Beaune – Powerful White and Red Wines
Côte de Beaune is home to great Chardonnays, which represent the pinnacle of white wines from Burgundy, ranging from the exciting Meursault to Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet, and Corton-Charlemagne. First-class Pinot Noirs can also originate from here.
Côte Chalonnaise – Affordable Burgundy Wines
This region produces a variety of white and red wines from villages like Givry and Mercurey, offering enjoyable, characterful Burgundies that are usually particularly attractive in price.
Mâconnais – Rising Star of Burgundy
The Mâconnais region is known for Chardonnays full of fruit and lively acidity. The sub-region of Pouilly-Fuissé shows how accessible Burgundies can be without losing their personality.
History and Culture of Winegrowing in Burgundy
Burgundy's roots stretch back to antiquity, shaped and refined by monasteries in the Middle Ages. Cistercians and Benedictines planted vineyards, divided parcels, and laid the groundwork for the vineyard classification system that endures to this day. Over centuries, a wine culture emerged in which origin, craftsmanship, and patience reign supreme.
The famous Hospices de Beaune is one of many monuments and today a center for important wine auctions. Charlemagne himself loved Burgundian wines – the famous Corton-Charlemagne vineyard is named after him.
Yet even centuries later, Burgundy continues to evolve: new vineyards are added or gain Premier Cru appellation status. Thanks to warmer summers, increasingly higher elevations are becoming attractive and are drawing more attention from winemakers.
Terroir, Sites, and Classification: What Makes Burgundy So Unique
The reason for the success of Burgundy lies in the many factors that interact here. The so-called Climats de Bourgogne make minimal differences in soil, exposure, and microclimate visible, thus leading to noticeable stylistic nuances. The interplay of the elegant grape varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with the finely tuned oak aging ultimately makes these wines so unmistakable. This allows these wines to mature for decades and offer long-lasting drinking pleasure.
