Founded in 2011, Senses Wines is a dream come true for three childhood friends from Occidental: Christopher Strieter, Max Thieriot and Myles Lawrence-Briggs. They began by farming their families’ historic vineyards, B.A. Thieriot and Hillcrest. The newest addition to the Senses family is Bodega Thieriot, three vineyards farmed in partnership with Valdez & Sons.

The name ‘Senses’ was carefully chosen to reflect the estate’s philosophy. It embodies the idea that wine is an experience that appeals to all the senses. Senses Wines is dedicated to producing wines that stimulate not only the palate and nose, but also emotions, memories and special moments – wines that reflect the unique terroir of Sonoma County.

Senses Wines specialises in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from top sites on the West Sonoma Coast and in the Russian River Valley. The estate benefits from the cooling influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean. This coastal location provides a natural advantage for cultivating cool-climate varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which thrive under the region’s temperate Californian sun.

One of the most notable features of Senses Wines is its hands-on approach to winemaking. Christopher Strieter and his team are involved in every step of the process, from vineyard care to barrel ageing. This level of dedication ensures that every bottle of Senses wine is a true reflection of their passion and commitment to quality. The commitment of Senses Wines is also evident in its sustainable farming practices. The vineyards are cultivated with care and respect for the environment, helping to preserve this beautiful part of California for future generations. Sustainability is not just a buzzword here; it is an integral part of the estate’s philosophy.

In collaboration with legendary winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, the team produces renowned single-vineyard wines. The 2015–2021 vintages received 95+ points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck awarded 95–99 points for the 2018–2021 vintages, and Lisa Perotti-Brown gave 94–97+ points in 2021.

The small but refined portfolio of Senses showcases the diverse and expressive facets of the Russian River Valley and demonstrates the estate’s mastery of both red and white grape varieties. The Pinot Noirs are particularly elegant examples of grace and depth, with a harmonious balance of fruit, earth and spice. The Chardonnays reveal a symphony of aromas, from crisp green apple to creamy vanilla.

Their wines are sold mainly directly from the estate to loyal customers. Today, Senses wines are so sought after that only limited quantities are additionally allocated to a small number of selected wine merchants. In Germany, the wines are distributed exclusively by Collectors Wine World.

Origin in Focus

California

California is the most versatile wine region in the USA – shaped by cool Pacific fog as well as hot inland valleys. This range enables styles from elegant, cool-climate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays to powerful Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux blends from Napa and Sonoma. Zinfandel stands for spicy, fruit-driven icons, while Paso Robles excels with Rhône varieties. Innovative winemakers, sustainable viticulture and diverse soils, from volcanic rock to slate and limestone, shape characterful wines with clear origin – from fresh everyday wines to world-famous top growths.
