Description

Spain / Castile and León / Toro

Javier Rodríguez is one of Spain's most outstanding winemakers and specializes in sophisticated terroir wines. Few people know the Tempranillo grape as well as he does. The ungrafted Tempranillo vines for El Teso Alto grow on a single plot at an altitude of 830 meters. These vines, planted on stony soils, were planted before the phylloxera epidemic of 1886 and yield extremely low, high-quality harvests. The result is scarcely a thousand bottles of this exclusive and unique wine.

Origin in Focus

Toro

Toro lies in the hot, continental highlands of Castile and is famous for its expressive Tempranillo wines, locally called Tinta de Toro. The vines often grow on sandy, sparse soils and can be very old – many even ungrafted. The extreme climate, with scorching hot days, cold nights and minimal rainfall, produces small, highly concentrated berries. Wines from Toro are therefore powerful, dark and spicy, yet surprisingly fresh, carried by firm, ripe tannins. Modern producers combine this intensity with greater finesse and precision. Houses such as Numanthia and Pintia (Vega Sicilia) have made Toro internationally known as an origin for characterful, long-lived premium red wines.
