Château Beychevelle is considered one of the most beautiful châteaux in Bordeaux. It is situated directly on the Gironde, amidst vineyards and surrounded by a dreamlike park. The name is derived from the term "baisse-voile" ("strike sails") and refers to the legend according to which passing ships would lower their sails in honour of the lord of the manor, the first Duke of Epernon, Jean-Louis Nogaret de La Valette. The ship with the raptor's head and lowered sails still adorns the Beychevelle label. For Bordeaux lovers, Château Beychevelle is one of the top addresses for impressive, finessed St. Juliens.
