Description

France / Bordeaux / Côtes de Castillon

At the beginning of the 20th century, Nicolas' grandfather, Georges Thienpont, moved from Flanders, Belgium, to Bordeaux, where he first acquired Château Troplong-Mondot in Saint-Émilion, and then, a little later, Vieux Château Certan, a jewel in Pomerol. In July 2011, Nicolas Thienpont purchased Château Alcée in Côtes de Castillon. In January 2014, the vineyard was expanded to 6.5 hectares with neighboring plots in Saint-Philippe-d'Aiguilhe. The vineyards are located on a limestone plateau whose terroir of red clay and limestone soils is similar to that of some of the best vineyards in St. Émilion. The vineyards, planted with vines averaging 40 years old, are cultivated only sustainably and close to nature. With patience and respect for nature, Nicolas Thienpont succeeds in producing a Grand Vin that excellently reflects its terroir.

Vieux Château Certan

Located in the heart of the famous Pomerol plateau, Vieux Château Certan stands as a timeless testament to excellence in viticulture. Owned by the renowned Thienpont winemaking family since 1924, the estate has undergone a fascinating evolution. Under the leadership of Alexandre Thienpont, a period of vineyard replanting and continuous improvement in winemaking quality began in 1985.

Vieux Château Certan benefits from a unique terroir regarded as one of the finest in Pomerol. Clay-rich gravel soils over iron-bearing limestone provide the ideal foundation for wines that, in great vintages, rank among the finest Bordeaux wines of all. This distinctive soil composition gives the wines incomparable aromatics and elegance.

The history of Vieux Château Certan is deeply rooted in the 18th century, when the estate was founded by the Demay family. Since then, it has passed through various families before eventually coming into the hands of the Thienpont family.

This link to the past is reflected in the estate’s name, which refers to the original owner Certan, while the addition ‘Vieux’ (old) emphasises the estate’s historical significance and tradition.

Vieux Château Certan has earned a well-deserved reputation for quality and elegance in Bordeaux. Taking its exceptional price-to-pleasure ratio into account, Vieux Certan now regularly ranks among the top Pomerol wines, another testament to its undisputed excellence and refinement.
