R. López de Heredia

The family-run Bodega López de Heredia is one of the oldest and most traditional estates in Rioja. In 2019, the winery took third place in the ‘World’s Best Vineyards’ competition.

Three vineyards belong to the estate, of which Tondonia is the most famous. At an altitude of 450 metres, it winds along the Ebro river. The grapes from its old vines produce remarkable wines of the highest quality.

One feature especially underlines the estate’s philosophy: the wines are given plenty of time. They spend years ageing in barrels from the estate’s own cooperage and are only released when perfectly mature. This creates elegant, finesse-rich wines most comparable to mature Burgundies or Barolos.

The estate is particularly known for its long-lived red wines, which mature in oak barrels in its historic cellars. These wines are defined by elegance, complexity and ageing ability. Alongside red wines, López de Heredia also produces white wines, including the famous Viña Tondonia Blanco, made from the indigenous Viura grape variety.

With its long history, commitment to quality and tradition, and unique style, R. López de Heredia is one of Rioja’s leading producers and enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide among wine lovers and experts.

Origin in Focus

Rioja

Rioja is Spain’s best-known wine region and stands for elegant red wines with ageing potential. The main variety is Tempranillo, often accompanied by Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. The climate varies between Atlantic, continental and Mediterranean influences, creating different stylistic nuances – from fresh and fragrant to powerful and spicy. Ageing ranges from fruit-driven Joven wines to long-matured Reserva and Gran Reserva, classically often in oak. In addition to reds, aromatic white wines, especially Viura, and rosados also shine.
