Description

Spain / Rioja / Rioja Alavesa / Laguardia

Javier San Pedro Ortega comes from a family of winemakers who have cultivated vineyards in Rioja for five generations. The talented young winemaker produced his first own wine at his father's winery at just 17 years old. In 2018, he opened his own winery and, in harmony with nature, deliberately produces only a small number of remarkable wines there. With its young team, this innovative winery creates wines that stand out from classic Rioja wine. The Garnacha vines, from which the grapes for Alpha originate, grow in a small 0.6-hectare plot at an altitude of 700 meters. In this rather cool climate, unique wines are created, and Alpha from the "Cave of the Wolves" is an impressive testament to this.

Javier San Pedro Ortega Wineries

Javier San Pedro Ortega comes from a long-established winemaking family in Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa) and belongs to the fifth generation of winemakers. He made his first own wine at the age of 17 and founded his own bodega in 2013. His style is clearly modern, terroir-driven and focused on single vineyards and precise cuvées.

Under labels such as Viuda Negra, he produces characterful Riojas that combine freshness, depth and elegance – with Tempranillo at the centre, sometimes complemented by Graciano or other local varieties. Subtle oak use, pure fruit and a lively acid structure create tension rather than heaviness. Javier San Pedro Ortega therefore stands for a new generation of Rioja: respectful of tradition, yet with a clear contemporary signature and an independent personality.

Origin in Focus

Rioja

Rioja is Spain’s best-known wine region and stands for elegant red wines with ageing potential. The main variety is Tempranillo, often accompanied by Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. The climate varies between Atlantic, continental and Mediterranean influences, creating different stylistic nuances – from fresh and fragrant to powerful and spicy. Ageing ranges from fruit-driven Joven wines to long-matured Reserva and Gran Reserva, classically often in oak. In addition to reds, aromatic white wines, especially Viura, and rosados also shine.
