Klein Constantia

Klein Constantia is a respected estate located in the picturesque Constantia Valley wine region of South Africa. Since its founding in the late 17th century, Klein Constantia has earned a reputation for award-winning wines and breathtaking scenery.

The sweet wine ‘Vin de Constance’ made this estate world-famous and was prized by European royal houses as early as the 18th century. In 1980, Duggie Jooste took over the neglected Klein Constantia estate and dared to make a fresh start. Three years later, he replanted the vineyards with the Muscat de Frontignan grape variety. Since 1986, this variety has been used to produce ‘Vin de Constance’, a tribute to the legendary 18th-century Constantia wine whose most famous admirer was Napoleon Bonaparte.

The harvest lasts two months, as only perfectly healthy and ripe grapes are picked by hand in many passes. What makes this noble sweet wine special is that it is not fortified.

Today, Klein Constantia sets standards in winemaking by combining traditional methods with modern technology to produce wines of exceptional quality. With views of Table Mountain and the ocean, the estate offers visitors a unique setting in which to taste excellent wines and experience the rich history of Constantia Valley.

Origin in Focus

Rioja

The Western Cape wine region is the heart of South African viticulture and home to many of the country’s finest estates. Cool, Atlantic-influenced coastal sites meet sun-drenched inland slopes – ideal for elegant yet powerful premium wines. Important origins such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Swartland and Walker Bay produce highly distinctive styles: from mineral Chenin Blancs and fresh Sauvignon Blancs to barrel-aged Chardonnay, complex Bordeaux blends, Shiraz and Pinotage. Old bush vines, diverse soils such as granite, schist and sandstone, and sustainable viticulture shape the individual signature of the producers. Thanks to the moderate climate, the grapes ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic depth – a hallmark of the best Western Cape wines. For explorers, the region offers a fascinating spectrum from precise terroir wines to iconic collector’s bottles.
