Description

South Africa / Western Cape / Coastal Region / Stellenbosch

Kleinood Tamberskloof was founded in 2000 and is releasing a special bottling of John Spicer Syrah for its 21st anniversary. Jazz pianist Kyle Shephard composed the Kleinood Nocturne for the 2015 vintage, and artist Jeanne Gaigher designed the special paper wrapping. The John Spicer is special in other ways too. After a few years, the de Villiers winemaking family noticed that a particular parcel of their vineyards consistently came out on top in every blind tasting. The reason for producing John Spicer Syrah lies solely in the outstanding and unique character of the wine that this vineyard parcel yields year after year – it is the ultimate expression of this special terroir.

Kleinood

Nestled in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley near Stellenbosch, Kleinood was discovered in 2000 as a hidden gem and transformed into an exclusive estate with olive groves. Ten hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive trees blend harmoniously with the unspoilt nature of the property.

Kleinood stands for the symbiosis of science and passion, reflected in the production of authentic and elegant wines. The renowned ‘Tamboerskloof’ wines bear the name of the family’s former home and embody their deep connection to tradition and origin. Particularly outstanding is the ‘John Spicer Syrah’, whose grapes are vinified with the utmost precision.

The estate is divided into 23 micro-parcels, each cultivated individually and vinified separately. The winery combines state-of-the-art technology with artisanal expertise to reveal the full potential of every grape.

Kleinood is more than an estate – it is a homage to the art of viticulture, shaped by dedication, authenticity and a deep connection to terroir.

Origin in Focus

Rioja

The Western Cape wine region is the heart of South African viticulture and home to many of the country’s finest estates. Cool, Atlantic-influenced coastal sites meet sun-drenched inland slopes – ideal for elegant yet powerful premium wines. Important origins such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Swartland and Walker Bay produce highly distinctive styles: from mineral Chenin Blancs and fresh Sauvignon Blancs to barrel-aged Chardonnay, complex Bordeaux blends, Shiraz and Pinotage. Old bush vines, diverse soils such as granite, schist and sandstone, and sustainable viticulture shape the individual signature of the producers. Thanks to the moderate climate, the grapes ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic depth – a hallmark of the best Western Cape wines. For explorers, the region offers a fascinating spectrum from precise terroir wines to iconic collector’s bottles.
