At the end of the 19th century, Albert Macquin acquired several châteaux and combined them to form Château Pavie Macquin. As an agricultural engineer, he significantly shaped viticulture in Saint-Émilion and is revered as a grand master of the transformation of the Saint-Émilion vineyards. The Château is now owned by his grandchildren and is managed by Nicolas Thienport and Stéphane Derenoncourt. Under their leadership, enormously concentrated, silky, and fruit-driven wines are produced. Together, they have further refined the character of Pavie Macquin, switched to sustainable viticulture, and raised the quality level. Consequently, the Château was awarded the prestigious rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé in 2006.

Château Pavie

Before the first vines were planted on the ‘Pavie hill’ in Saint-Émilion, Pavie peaches grew there, giving the vineyard its name.

The origins of Château Pavie reach back to antiquity, when the Romans planted the first vineyards in this region.

The estate itself experienced a period of prosperity in the 19th century, when it gained recognition under the leadership of Ferdinand Bouffard. Bouffard recognised the immense potential of the terroir and introduced modern viticultural practices to steadily improve the quality of the wines.

In 1998, entrepreneur Gérard Perse acquired the château and invested heavily in modernising the estate and cellar facilities, further enhancing the quality of the wines.

A quarter of the parcels were replanted, the winery was modernised and additional parcels were acquired. 70% of the vineyard is farmed using sustainable methods. In 2012, the estate was rewarded for its quality drive and classified as ‘Premier Grand Cru Classé A’.
