Description

France / Bordeaux / Haut-Médoc

At the beginning of the D2 road into the Médoc lies Château Cantemerle, one of the most charming and oldest Grand Cru Classé châteaux in Bordeaux. The magnificent estate fell into disrepair for many decades until it found a new owner in the 1980s. New plantings in the vineyards and significant investments in the cellar led Château Cantemerle back to the top of the Médoc in terms of quality. The vines planted in the 1980s now yield high-quality harvests. According to director Philippe Dambrine, the difference is obvious: "now we are discovering what Cantemerle must have tasted like in 1855."

Château Cantemerle

Château Cantemerle is a classic, highly regarded estate from the Haut-Médoc on Bordeaux’s Left Bank and stands for elegant, balanced Bordeaux with reliable quality. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and, depending on the vintage, small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, giving structure, freshness and fine Médoc spice.

On the palate, the wines usually show blackcurrant, cherry, cedarwood, tobacco and subtle roasted notes, along with fine-grained tannins and a clear, straight finish. Cantemerle is often comparatively accessible early, but gains significantly in complexity with a few years of bottle age – ideal for anyone seeking classic Bordeaux with good ageing potential.

Origin in Focus

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is one of the world’s most renowned wine regions – a name that has stood for elegance, diversity and ageing potential for centuries. Gravel, clay and limestone soils alternate, allowing fine nuances in the wines that reflect both terroir and craftsmanship.

Bordeaux is typically known for blends in which grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc work together harmoniously.

Stylistically, red Bordeaux wines are defined by a balance of fruit, structure and freshness. The white wines – usually made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and sometimes Muscadelle – range from crisp and citrus-driven to creamy and complex.
