Bodegas Vega Sicilia

Bodegas Vega Sicilia is Spain’s most legendary estate and is located in Ribera del Duero in Castilla y León.

It was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who was the first to bring French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to Spain and plant them alongside the local Tinto Fino (Tempranillo).

By the beginning of the 20th century, the estate had already achieved international recognition under the Herrero family.

A decisive turning point came in 1982, when the Álvarez family took over the estate – the same year in which Ribera del Duero received DO status. Since then, the family has continued to lead the estate with a strong commitment to quality and international success.

Ribera Del Duero

Origin in Focus

Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero in Castile and León is one of Spain’s top regions for powerful red wines. At its heart is Tempranillo, known here as ‘Tinto Fino’, which ripens on high plateaus with large day-night temperature differences. The continental climate and calcareous, sandy-loamy soils produce deeply coloured wines with ripe fruit, firm structure and lively acidity. Stylistically, the spectrum ranges from fresh, fruit-driven Crianzas to complex, long-lived Reservas and Gran Reservas, often aged in oak. The result: character, concentration and elegance with excellent ageing potential.
