Description

Chile / Aconcagua Valley

The Chilean winery Viña Seña was created from the collaboration between winemaking legend Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick, one of the most respected Chilean winemakers. Both recognized the potential of the wine region in the Aconcagua Valley and began to plant and sustainably cultivate a vineyard in a cool location at the foot of the almost 7,000 meter high Aconcagua mountain. Here they produce the fresh, elegant cult wine Seña, which has been one of the best wines in the world since the sensational Berlin Tasting in 2004. 36 of the most respected wine experts in Europe met for this blind tasting to blind taste 16 wines and awarded Seña second place, even ahead of Château Lafite-Rothschild .

Viña Seña

The Chilean estate Viña Seña was created in 1995 as a joint venture between winemaking legend Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick, one of Chile’s most respected wine producers.

Both recognised the potential of the Aconcagua Valley and began establishing and sustainably cultivating a vineyard in a cool site at the foot of the nearly 7,000-metre-high Mount Aconcagua. The location offers optimal conditions for producing quality wines, including a diversity of soils, an ideal climate and abundant sunshine.

Here they produce the fresh, elegant cult wine Seña, which has counted among the best wines in the world at least since the sensational Berlin Tasting in 2004. At this blind tasting, 36 of Europe’s most respected wine experts gathered to taste 16 wines blind and awarded Seña second place, ahead of Château Lafite Rothschild.

Since 2005, the estate has been 100% owned by the Chadwick family.

Origin in Focus

Aconcagua Valley

The Aconcagua Valley is one of Chile’s most exciting wine regions and lies north of Santiago between the Pacific and the Andes. It is named after the mighty Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas. The vineyards benefit from cool nights, dry sunny days and the constant alternation of sea breeze and Andean winds – ideal conditions for slowly ripening, aromatically dense grapes. In the higher, inland sites, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Carmenère wines are produced with dark fruit, fine spice and firm but ripe tannin structure. Closer to the coast, in Aconcagua Costa, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir show surprising freshness, saline minerality and clear citrus or red-fruit aromas. Stony, alluvial soils add tension and longevity. For premium customers, the Aconcagua Valley offers characterful Andean wines with high recognisability and very good ageing potential.
