Penfolds

In the world of Australian wine, Penfolds is a legend. Since 1844, the estate has stood for consistent quality and innovation, making it one of Australia’s most important producers. Under the leadership of Peter Gago, the fourth in a line of renowned chief winemakers, Penfolds has not only preserved its heritage, but also gained an international presence with projects in California and Champagne.

Penfolds’ roots go back to Christopher Rawson Penfold, an English physician who emigrated to Australia in 1844. His vision and interest in wine laid the foundation for the estate. Penfolds achieved its first successes with Riesling and Clairet, a style reminiscent of the finest wines of Bordeaux. The real breakthrough, however, came with the legendary Grange, which can stand alongside the most renowned wines in the world.

Max Schubert, who became chief winemaker at Penfolds in 1948, played a defining role in the estate’s modern era. His creative freedom and innovative spirit led to the development of Grange and the famous ‘Bin’ wines. Schubert was a pioneer of modern Australian winemaking, skilfully combining tradition and innovation.

The distinctive quality of Penfolds wines remains consistent over the years. Despite using grapes from different regions, each wine retains the unmistakable Penfolds style. Today, the Penfolds legacy is carried forward by a team of experienced winemakers with more than 150 years of combined experience.

Penfolds is not just a brand, but a symbol of Australian wine excellence. Its history and heritage are closely linked to the development of the Australian wine industry and are kept alive through the passion and dedication of its winemakers.
