Marques de Murrieta

Marqués de Murrieta is one of Spain’s most historic estates and is regarded as the birthplace of quality Rioja wines. Founded in 1852 by Don Luciano de Murrieta, the house introduced the idea of château-style wines inspired by Bordeaux to the region and thereby laid the foundation for the modern Rioja style.

The estate is located on the extensive Ygay Estate in Rioja Alta, whose high-altitude parcels and old vines provide structure, finesse and exceptional longevity. Marqués de Murrieta combines traditional vinification, long barrel and bottle ageing, with precise contemporary cellar work.

Its flagship, Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, is one of Spain’s most iconic wines and is produced only in outstanding vintages. Marqués de Murrieta stands worldwide for elegance, consistency and remarkable ageing ability.

Origin in Focus

Rioja

Rioja is Spain’s best-known wine region and stands for elegant red wines with ageing potential. The main variety is Tempranillo, often accompanied by Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. The climate varies between Atlantic, continental and Mediterranean influences, creating different stylistic nuances – from fresh and fragrant to powerful and spicy. Ageing ranges from fruit-driven Joven wines to long-matured Reserva and Gran Reserva, classically often in oak. In addition to reds, aromatic white wines, especially Viura, and rosados also shine.
