Description

Domaine de la Grange des Pères was founded in 1992 by Laurent & Bernard Vaillé and is now one of the most renowned chateaus in Languedoc. The 13 hectares of terroir soils, consisting of clay-limestone and rolled pebbles, are cultivated biodynamically and yield powerful, elegant, long-lived wines.

The 2018 Rouge is a Syrah-dominant blend (approx. 40% Syrah, 40% Mourvèdre, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Counoise), vinified from single grape varieties, spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts. It undergoes a long maceration, followed by 24 months of aging in 228-liter barriques (one-third new wood) and is bottled unfiltered.

Domaine de la Grange des Pères

Domaine de la Grange des Pères is regarded as a cult estate of the Languedoc and is located near Aniane, not far from the famous Terrasses du Larzac. On poor, stony soils, it produces extremely limited red and white wines that recall great Rhône or Burgundy wines more than classic southern French reds. The red wines are dominated by Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon; they combine dark fruit, garrigue herbs, fine spice and cool minerality with silky, very present tannins and a long finish. Ageing is traditional, with plenty of time in the cellar and no fashionable effects – always aiming for maximum finesse rather than mere power. The rare white wines show density, saline tension and remarkable ageing potential. For a premium online shop, these wines are sought-after collector’s items: strictly limited, full of character and the expression of one of the great names of the Languedoc.

Origin in Focus

Languedoc

Languedoc stretches along the Mediterranean coast and is considered one of Europe’s largest and most diverse wine regions. Warm, sunny days, cooling winds and soils ranging from limestone to slate create ideal conditions for characterful wines. Traditionally, red blends from Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan dominate, ranging from juicy and fruit-driven to spicy and powerful. They are joined by fresh white wines from Picpoul, Grenache Blanc or Vermentino, as well as aromatic rosés and excellent sparkling wines from Limoux.

Languedoc has evolved from a bulk-wine image into a dynamic quality region: many winemakers focus on old vines, sustainable cultivation and precise cellar work. The result is authentic Mediterranean wines with an excellent price-to-pleasure ratio.
