Description

USA / California / Napa Valley

After completing his studies, Christian Moueix initially managed the family's wineries, including the renowned Château Petrus. While still studying in California, he recognized the great potential of Napa Valley, returned, and founded the small boutique winery Ulysses here in 2008. His vineyards are located in Oakville, a region with a moderate, Mediterranean climate. The cooling weather influences from San Francisco Bay produce fresh and very elegant wines here. Christian Moueix bottled only a few bottles of his exceptional Cabernet in the perfect 2016 vintage. It is his best vintage to date.

Behind this estate is the Moueix family, known for great Bordeaux such as Trotanoy – here translated to a top terroir in Oakville on the western side of Napa Valley. The vines root deeply in gravelly alluvial soils near the To Kalon corridor: abundant sunshine during the day, significant cooling at night. Cabernet Sauvignon is the focus, complemented by small proportions of other Bordeaux varieties. The style is shaped more by Bordeaux-influenced finesse than by a blockbuster approach: dense yet cool dark fruit such as cassis and blackberry, graphite, cedar and fine herbal spice, carried by firm structure and very precise, polished tannins. Oak use is high-quality but deliberately restrained to preserve freshness, clarity and terroir character. The wines are impressive when young, but reveal their full complexity only after several years of bottle age – ideal for Napa collectors and lovers of great Cabernet classics.

Kalifornien

Origin in Focus

California

California is the most versatile wine region in the USA – shaped by cool Pacific fog as well as hot inland valleys. This range enables styles from elegant, cool-climate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays to powerful Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux blends from Napa and Sonoma. Zinfandel stands for spicy, fruit-driven icons, while Paso Robles excels with Rhône varieties. Innovative winemakers, sustainable viticulture and diverse soils, from volcanic rock to slate and limestone, shape characterful wines with clear origin – from fresh everyday wines to world-famous top growths.
