Description

USA / California / Napa Valley / Stag’s Leap

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars shot to international fame when it beat renowned Bordeaux Grand Crus and took first place in the legendary Paris Wine Tasting of 1976. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was founded in 1970 by Nathan Fay, who was one of the first winemakers to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley. During the tasting of various batches of the 1974 vintage, Nathan Fay decided that one batch, which was in the large wooden barrel number 23, was so exceptionally beautiful and delicious that it should be bottled separately. The icon of the house was born and has only been produced in exceptional years ever since.

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars

This estate from the Stags Leap District is one of Napa Valley’s historically most important Cabernet producers – famous since the Judgment of Paris in 1976, when one of its Cabernets surpassed elite Bordeaux wines. The vineyards lie at the foot of rocky slopes: warm by day and significantly cooler at night. This allows the grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and aromatic clarity. The focus is on parcel-specific Cabernets from sites such as S.L.V. and FAY, as well as the iconic CASK 23 cuvée. Stylistically, the house combines ripe dark fruit such as cassis and blackberry with fine graphite and cedar spice, silky yet firm tannins and elegant structure – more finesse than sheer power. Careful hand harvesting, selective sorting and precise, high-quality oak use ensure enormous ageing potential. Ideal for customers seeking classic, collectible Napa Cabernets with history.

Origin in Focus

California

California is the most versatile wine region in the USA – shaped by cool Pacific fog as well as hot inland valleys. This range enables styles from elegant, cool-climate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays to powerful Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux blends from Napa and Sonoma. Zinfandel stands for spicy, fruit-driven icons, while Paso Robles excels with Rhône varieties. Innovative winemakers, sustainable viticulture and diverse soils, from volcanic rock to slate and limestone, shape characterful wines with clear origin – from fresh everyday wines to world-famous top growths.
