In 1979, Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, one of the great wine pioneers of the New World, founded Opus One in the heart of the Napa Valley, in the midst of the Top location To Kolon. The goal was to produce a top Californian wine with the combined experience of both families. Covering an area of more than 68 hectares, Opus One's four vineyards are planted five to six times more densely than is typical in California. At higher planting densities, the vines produce smaller berries with a more concentrated juice yield and more intense aromas. Under the direction of Michael Silacci, since 2004, the quality has increased again and Opus One is one of the really great wines on this planet!
