The story of Le Macchiole – a dream becomes a legend

The story of Le Macchiole began in the early 1980s, when Eugenio Campolmi – a visionary winemaker – dreamed of creating something unique in Bolgheri. Unlike many other producers, Eugenio focused on grape varieties that had previously received little attention in the region, including Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. Le Macchiole was born.

After Eugenio’s far too early death in 2002, his wife Cinzia Merli took over the running of the estate and carried on his legacy with exceptional skill and a keen sense for the demands of the time. Supported by a talented team and with an unerring feel for quality, she transformed Le Macchiole into a true Italian cult wine brand. Today the estate is considered one of the finest addresses for top wines from Bolgheri and Italy – a true jewel of Tuscany.

Behind every great estate are people, and the most important figure behind the wines is cellar master Luca Rettondini, an experienced expert at Cinzia Merli’s side. Luca is known for his ability to capture the terroir of Bolgheri in every drop.

Together with a team of experienced winemakers and oenologists, Le Macchiole focuses on sustainable cultivation and meticulous handwork. Every detail, from vine selection to vinification, is carried out with the greatest care.

Set among gentle hills and surrounded by lush vineyards, Le Macchiole radiates timeless elegance. The vines thrive in an exceptional microclimate shaped by proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea, which provides a constant breeze and optimal temperature fluctuations.

The state-of-the-art winery combines functionality with aesthetics and tradition. In the cellar, equipped with the latest technology, wines are created that unite the highest precision with the unique signature of Bolgheri’s terroir.

Tuscany is one of Italy’s defining wine regions, known for Sangiovese and iconic appellations such as Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The Mediterranean climate with sea breezes and diverse soils produces elegant, fresh wines with structure. On the coast, ‘Super Tuscans’ are also made from Cabernet, Merlot and other varieties. In addition to red wines, the region offers characterful whites such as Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Vermentino, as well as the traditional dessert wine Vin Santo.
