Premier Grand Cru Classé
The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is a remarkable wine that I regretted not buying en primeur as soon as it landed in my glass. It offers complex aromas of minty cassis, pencil shavings, clay soil, cigar paper, toasted espresso and violets. It is medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with very concentrated, wonderfully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish. With an alcohol content, its incipient complexity, its ineffable completeness and its exquisite balance make it the purist's choice among the three vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020. In this vintage, the lots included in the blend were largely limited to the central gravel sites that are the heart of Mouton, meaning there is a little less to distribute. This was the first year under the leadership of Mouton's new technical director, Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, and he has made a good start
