Argentina / Mendoza

Cheval des Andes is a collaboration between Château Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de los Andes, a pioneer in cool-climate viticulture in Argentina's high altitudes. The inspiration for Cheval des Andes came from the search for original Malbec vines. Many years ago, Malbec was grown in Bordeaux. In the mid-19th century, some vines made their way to Argentina. While phylloxera destroyed the vines in Bordeaux, the Malbec vines in Argentina were spared from the plague. When Pierre Lurton, owner of Château Cheval Blanc, discovered the breathtaking Malbec vineyard Las Compuertas in Mendoza, he was immediately fascinated and wanted to revive the Bordeaux wines of the past. Since then, this Bordeaux cuvée, which has received 100 points for the second time, has been the flagship of Cheval des Andes.

Cheval des Andes is considered one of Argentina’s most emblematic estates and was born from the collaboration between Château Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de los Andes. The vineyards lie in Luján de Cuyo and the higher Paraje Altamira, shaped by sparse, limestone-rich Andean soils, intense sunlight and cool nights. These conditions produce wines of great aromatic precision, freshness and structure. Malbec forms the heart of the cuvée, bringing silky power and dark fruit, while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes depth, elegance and longevity. Cheval des Andes stands for a unique union of French finesse and Argentine expressiveness – complex, harmonious and with impressive ageing potential.

Mendoza

Mendoza at the foot of the Andes is Argentina’s most important wine region. The continental, sunny climate with large day-night temperature differences and vineyards at elevations of over 1,000 metres produce ripe yet fresh wines. Malbec is the leading figure: dark, juicy, with violet fruit, gentle tannins and good depth – especially from subregions such as Luján de Cuyo and the higher Uco Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda and aromatic white wines such as Chardonnay and Torrontés also impress. Modern irrigation from meltwater and precise winemaking create clear, characterful styles with very good price-to-pleasure value.
