Geschichte der Rebsorte

Die Geschichte des Primitivo ist eng mit der süditalienischen Weintradition verbunden. Die Sorte wurde vermutlich bereits im 18. Jahrhundert in Apulien kultiviert. Der Name „Primitivo“ leitet sich vom italienischen „primo“ ab und bedeutet „früh“, was auf die frühe Reife der Traube hinweist. Interessanterweise wurde erst in den späten 1960er Jahren durch DNA-Analysen die enge Verwandtschaft mit der amerikanischen Zinfandel-Traube nachgewiesen. Beide Sorten stammen ursprünglich von der kroatischen Rebsorte „Crljenak Kaštelanski“ ab.

Durch den internationalen Vergleich und die Entdeckung der genetischen Verwandtschaft wurde Primitivo in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu einer internationalen Rebsorte, deren Beliebtheit weit über Italien hinausreicht. Insbesondere die Weine aus Manduria gelten heute als Inbegriff für kraftvolle, charaktervolle Rotweine Italiens und erfreuen sich weltweit großer Anerkennung.
