How do you store wine properly?

The Art of Wine Storage

Imagine opening a bottle in ten years — and it does not merely taste good, but better than you can imagine today. This magic does not happen by chance. It is the result of consistent, carefully considered wine storage.

So how should wine be stored so that a good bottle becomes a great experience — or even an asset? In this article, we show which conditions wine truly needs, which mistakes you should avoid at home and why professional storage, such as the service we offer at Collectors Wine World, can make the decisive difference for many wines.

Why proper storage is so important

Wine is a living product. After bottling, it continues to evolve: aromas change, tannins become smoother and the texture gains depth. Whether this ageing process moves toward harmony or decline depends largely on the environment.

The most important goals of good storage are:

  • Preserving quality: freshness, fruit and structure should be maintained.
  • Controlled maturation: the wine should develop slowly and in balance.
  • Preserving and increasing value: especially for sought-after wines, bottle condition is a decisive factor for market value.

Even small mistakes — repeated temperature fluctuations, overly dry air or light — can permanently impair a wine’s development.

The five key factors in wine storage

1. Temperature: constant rather than cold

The ideal storage temperature for wine is around 12–14 °C. The exact value matters less than consistency.

  • Too warm (above approx. 18 °C): the wine matures too quickly, becomes tired and oxidizes earlier.
  • Too cold (well below 10 °C for longer periods): development slows considerably and white wines may appear dull.
  • Fluctuations: repeated temperature rises and falls stress the wine, expand and contract the liquid around the cork and can lead to leakage over time.

At Collectors Wine World, we store your wines at a constant 14 °C — an ideal value that allows maturation without overburdening the wine.

2. Humidity: protection for the cork

A relative humidity of around 60–70% is considered optimal. Air that is too dry causes natural corks to dry out over time; they become porous, air enters and the wine oxidizes. If humidity is permanently too high, there is a risk of mould on capsules or labels.

Our cellars maintain a constant humidity of around 65% — ideal for keeping corks supple while protecting labels and packaging.

3. Light: the invisible enemy

UV radiation — especially direct sunlight or harsh neon light — can cause lasting damage to wine. Particularly sensitive are:

  • Sparkling wines and Champagne
  • White wines in clear bottles
  • Light, aromatic red wines

The consequences range from flat aromatics to the notorious “lightstruck” taste.

For this reason, wine should always be stored in darkness. Our storage facility is designed to protect your wines from direct light — a basic requirement for long-term maturation.

4. Vibration: keeping wine at rest

Wine needs peace. Continuous vibrations — from household appliances, road traffic or industrial equipment — can disturb sediment formation and negatively affect maturation. Fine wines should therefore not be stored above a washing machine or next to a heating system.

In professional wine cellars such as ours, the shelving systems are stable, and the bottles rest securely with minimal vibration over the long term.

5. Bottle position: horizontal is the standard

Wines sealed with natural cork should generally be stored lying down. This keeps the cork moist from the inside and prevents it from drying out. Wines with screwcaps or glass closures may also be stored upright, since the main reason for horizontal storage no longer applies.

Another advantage of horizontal storage: bottles can be organized space-efficiently, clearly and safely — especially in larger collections.

Wine storage at home: what works and what does not

Not every collection immediately requires a professional wine cellar. Anyone who owns a few dozen bottles can achieve a great deal at home with thoughtful solutions, provided a few basic rules are observed.

Good places for home storage

  • A cool, dark room without radiators, such as an older cellar room
  • A high-quality wine climate cabinet with stable temperature and limited vibration

Important: the room should be dry but not “bone dry”, have no direct heat sources and be as free as possible from strong odours such as paints, solvents or oil tanks.

Places you should avoid

  • Kitchen: strong temperature fluctuations, steam, light and odours
  • Living-room shelf: visually attractive, but usually too warm and too bright
  • Attic: large seasonal temperature fluctuations
  • Normal refrigerator: suitable for short-term chilling before drinking, but not for long-term storage — too cold, too dry and too much vibration

As your collection grows, the quality of your bottles increases or you deliberately store wines as an investment, home solutions quickly reach their limits. At that point, moving into a professionally operated wine cellar is worthwhile.

Professional storage at Collectors Wine World

At Collectors Wine World, we have created a wine cellar tailored precisely to the needs of discerning wine lovers and collectors. Our goal is an environment in which great wines can develop optimally — while you enjoy maximum transparency and security.

Ideal climate across 1,300 m²

In our approximately 1,300 m² wine cellar, your bottles are stored under strictly controlled conditions:

  • Constant 14 °C all year round
  • Around 65% humidity — ideal for cork protection
  • Protection from light and external influences
  • Low-vibration shelving systems for calm maturation

This creates the perfect conditions for harmonious maturation and potential value appreciation of your wines.

Security collectors appreciate

Wine is not only a pleasure product, but often also an asset. Our security standards are correspondingly high:

  • Modern video surveillance
  • Alarm protection with a professionally monitored system
  • Security service and controlled access

This means your collection is always in the best hands.

Transparency & convenience: access when you need it

We maintain precise inventory documentation for your stored wines. This means you always retain a clear overview, whether you hold your bottles for pleasure or as an investment.

At the same time, we offer you unrestricted access, 365 days a year and around the clock. Your wines belong to you — you decide when to enjoy, move or add to them. We make sure they rest under perfect conditions until then.

Who is professional wine storage for?

Professional storage is particularly interesting for:

  • Collectors building a collection over years or decades
  • Investors investing in rare or limited wines
  • Wine lovers whose home storage options are exhausted
  • Gastronomy & hospitality businesses that require consistently perfect storage conditions

If you realize that the value of your wines significantly exceeds the cost of professional storage — or if you simply want maximum security and peace of mind for your treasures — the step into our wine cellar is both economically and emotionally sensible.

Storage is value creation

Proper wine storage is not a secondary matter, but a decisive part of the value chain. It protects your investment, preserves the winemaker’s signature and enables those magical moments when a mature wine reveals its full complexity in the glass.

Whether you want to secure your first special bottles or strategically manage a growing collection, we support you with experience, care and an environment that meets the highest standards.
