The secret to its outstanding quality is, among other things, the yield restriction of 40 to 45 hectoliters per hectare and the correct timing of the harvest. After fermentation, each individual barrel is examined and tasted, and only the very best are used for the Grand Vin.

The Grand Vin Château Lafite-Rothschild accounts for around 40% of the estate's grapes and is one of the most sought-after red wines in the world. Its style differs from many other top Bordeaux wines through exceptional finesse and nobility.

Typical aromas include blackcurrant, cassis, cedar, violet, tobacco, graphite and fine spice. With age, complex nuances of cigar box, truffle and pencil lead develop, often regarded as characteristic of Pauillac.

Although the wines rarely seek to impress through sheer power, they possess enormous inner density and exceptional ageing potential. Great vintages can mature for many decades and rank among the longest-lived wines of the Médoc.

Alongside the Grand Vin, the château produces the renowned second wine “Carruades de Lafite”, offering earlier access to the house style. Around 50% of the grapes go into Carruades, while the remaining 10% are used for “Légende de Pauillac”. Domaines Barons de Rothschild is also involved with numerous other leading estates, including Rieussec, Duhart-Milon and L’Évangile in Bordeaux, as well as projects such as Aussières, Los Vascos and Bodega Caro.
