The Diversity of Italian Wine Regions

    Terroir and grape varieties

The château lies in the north of the Médoc within the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Its vineyards extend right up to the border with Pauillac and are located only a few hundred metres from the vines of legendary Château Lafite Rothschild.

The estate covers around 64 hectares and sits on one of the finest gravel rises in all of Bordeaux. The name “Cos” comes from an old Gascon word meaning “hill of pebbles”, a direct reference to the geological foundation of the estate. Deep gravel soils provide excellent drainage, while underlying layers of clay and limestone supply the vines with sufficient water even in dry years.

This combination allows exceptionally even ripening of the grapes. The microclimate also benefits from proximity to the Gironde, which moderates temperature fluctuations and reduces the risk of extreme weather.

The vineyards are planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for around 60% of the area. It is complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Petit Verdot. The relatively high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wines their typical structure, freshness and ageing potential, while Merlot contributes richness and suppleness.

The wines of Château Cos d’Estournel

The Grand Vin Château Cos d’Estournel is one of France's great premium wine icons. It combines the power of Saint-Estèphe with remarkable aromatic depth and elegance. Typical aromas include blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, cedar, tobacco, spices, graphite and fine toasted notes from ageing in French barriques.

A defining feature is the combination of density and freshness. Despite their concentration, the wines rarely feel heavy and instead gain further complexity over decades. Great vintages can age comfortably for 30 to 50 years or more.

Alongside the Grand Vin, the estate produces the second wine Pagodes de Cos, made predominantly from younger vines and more approachable earlier, while retaining the typical house style.

Cos d’Estournel also produces Cos d’Estournel Blanc, one of Bordeaux's most sought-after white wines. The small production of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon ranks among the region's most exclusive French white wines, combining intense aromatics with remarkable freshness and ageing potential.
