Die besondere Qualität der südafrikanischen Weine beginnt im Weinberg. Das mediterrane Klima des Western Cape sorgt für warme, trockene Sommer und milde Winter. Gleichzeitig bringen kalte Luftströmungen vom Atlantik und Indischen Ozean eine willkommene Abkühlung. Sie verlängern die Reifephase der Trauben und bewahren Frische sowie aromatische Spannung.

Hinzu kommt eine außergewöhnliche geologische Vielfalt. Verwitterter Granit, Sandstein, Schiefer und eisenhaltige Böden verleihen den Weinen je nach Herkunft einen ganz eigenen Charakter. Viele Reben wachsen zudem als traditionelle Bush Vines, die ohne Drahtrahmen niedrig über dem Boden stehen. Diese Erziehungsform schützt die Trauben vor Hitze und Trockenheit und bringt häufig besonders konzentrierte Weine hervor.

Mit dem Vin de Constance gibt es auch einen klassischen Süßwein. Das ist ein historischer, natürlich süßer Wein aus Muscat de Frontignan, der ursprünglich von den Weinbergen in Constantia bei Kapstadt stammt und schon im 18 und 19. Jahrhundert in ganz Europa berühmt war.

Längst gehört Südafrika auch zu den spannendsten Schaumweinländern der Welt. Unter der Bezeichnung Cap Classique entstehen Schaumweine nach traditioneller Flaschengärung, häufig aus Chardonnay und Pinot Noir. Lange Hefelager, feine Perlage und eine bemerkenswerte Präzision verleihen ihnen eine Eigenständigkeit, die weit über den Vergleich mit Champagner hinausgeht.

Gerade Regionen wie Stellenbosch und Franschhoek haben maßgeblich dazu beigetragen, dass Cap Classique heute zu den renommiertesten Schaumweinstilen der südlichen Hemisphäre zählt.

Stellenbosch steht wie keine andere Region für den modernen Weinbau Südafrikas. Hier verbinden sich Geschichte und Innovation, internationale Rebsorten und eigenständige Stilistik, mediterranes Klima und außergewöhnliche Böden zu Weinen mit unverwechselbarem Charakter.

Wer Weine aus Südafrika entdeckt, begegnet heute weit mehr als kraftvollen Rotweinen oder sonnenverwöhnten Weißweinen. Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, Cap Classique und die große Vielfalt der Cape Winelands zeigen ein Weinland, das zu den dynamischsten und spannendsten Herkunftsregionen der Welt gehört – und dessen Entwicklung längst noch nicht abgeschlossen ist.
