Montepulciano is primarily at home in central and southern Italy. Its most famous origin is the Abruzzo region, where Montepulciano d’Abruzzo enjoys worldwide recognition under DOC and DOCG designations. The region's soils and climate – shaped by a combination of sea breezes and mountain landscapes – produce particularly balanced, fruit-driven yet structured wines. The Marche, with Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno, as well as Molise and Puglia, are also known for Montepulciano wines. In the different growing areas, terroir plays a decisive role in the wine's character: Abruzzo tends to produce powerful, balanced wines, while the Marche and Molise often yield softer, more approachable styles.

Important to know: Montepulciano should not be confused with the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from Tuscany. That red wine is made predominantly from Sangiovese (locally called Prugnolo Gentile) and has nothing to do with the Montepulciano grape – a common source of confusion among wine lovers.
