History of the grape variety
The history of Primitivo is closely linked to southern Italian wine tradition. The variety was probably already cultivated in Puglia in the 18th century. The name “Primitivo” derives from the Italian “primo”, meaning “early”, referring to the grape's early ripening. Interestingly, DNA analysis only established its close relationship with the American Zinfandel grape in the late 1960s. Both varieties ultimately descend from the Croatian grape Crljenak Kaštelanski.
Through international comparison and the discovery of this genetic relationship, Primitivo has become an international grape variety over recent decades, with popularity extending far beyond Italy. Wines from Manduria in particular are now considered quintessential powerful, characterful Italian reds and enjoy worldwide recognition.
