Champagne Krug
Krug Champagne – Masterpieces of Champagne
Grape varieties used by Champagne Krug
The foundation of the distinctive Krug style lies in the three classic Champagne grape varieties – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. Each variety contributes its own personality:
- Pinot Noir provides structure, depth, and warmth,
- Chardonnay offers freshness and elegance,
- Pinot Meunier complements the assemblage with fruit and softness.
At Krug, these grape varieties are not simply processed – they are interpreted. Over 250 base wines from more than 150 plots are available to the Cellar Masters to create the perfect harmony. This results not in an ordinary sparkling wine, but in a vinous work of art that is identical in style year after year, yet unique in expression
Red wines in a Champagne Krug – the backbone of the Cuvée
While Krug is known for its cuvées, the red wines – especially those made from Pinot Noir – play a crucial role in the assemblage. They provide structure, power, and a delicate spice that adds depth to the wines. These wines come from selected sites such as Aÿ and Ambonnay, where the chalky soil imparts a distinctive minerality to the grapes.
The base wines are aged in small wooden barrels – a rare approach in Champagne – which enhances their texture and complexity. This method is more reminiscent of the aging of great Burgundies than of classic Crémant or simple sparkling wines.
Krug's Art of Assemblage
The art of assemblage is at the heart of Krug. Each vintage, each plot, each barrel aging is tasted blind and fine-tuned. This is how the legendary Krug Grande Cuvée is created, re-composed annually – a symphony of over 120 wines from various vintages.
Its character: opulent, profound, yet with a dancing freshness – a prestige Champagne that unites emotion and precision.
Terroir und Rebsorten
Krug Grande Cuvée is more than a champagne – it is the soul of the house. Each edition tells the story of over 20 years of maturation, patience, and passion. It symbolically represents what Krug stands for: timeless elegance, expression, and perfection.
Those looking to buy Krug Champagne online will find in the Grande Cuvée an uncompromising entry into the world of top sparkling wines – with a harmonious balance of freshness, maturity, and depth.
About the Krug Winery
The House of Champagne Krug was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug – a man with a vision: to create champagne that tasted equally magnificent every year, regardless of weather and harvest conditions. Early on, Krug embraced parcel-by-parcel vinification and oak barrel aging – techniques that were revolutionary in Champagne at the time.
Today, Krug belongs to the LVMH group, but remains a family business at heart. Olivier Krug, sixth generation, continues the tradition and combines it with modern precision. In a region full of big names like Champagne Dom Perignon, Krug remains synonymous with individuality and artisanal perfection.
