Red wines from Abruzzo are known for their strong character and often excellent value for money. The region's flagship wine is Montepulciano d'Abruzzo: juicy, dark fruity, and spicy, usually with soft, ripe tannins. Typical aromas include cherry, dark berries, plum, herbs, and depending on the aging process, some cocoa or vanilla.

In addition to the classic, fruit-driven wines, there are also serious, age-worthy qualities – especially from good sites and with longer aging. Abruzzo red wines pair perfectly with pizza & pasta, ragù, grilled dishes, lamb, and hearty antipasti.
